Colca Canyon: Full Day or 2-Day Tour? Differences, Prices and Which to Choose (2026)

We compare the Colca Full Day with the 2-day tour: timings, prices, effort, condors and hot springs — so you pick the right one for your time and energy.

It is the question we get asked most at the agency: "should I do Colca in one day or two?" Both tours visit the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint and the valley villages, but the experience is different. Here is the honest comparison, no small print.

What the Full Day is like

The Colca Canyon Full Day leaves Arequipa at around 3:00–4:00 a.m. and returns between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. In a single day you see the essentials:

  • The Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve: vicuñas at dawn.
  • The Patapampa viewpoint (4,910 m): the full chain of volcanoes.
  • Cruz del Cóndor in mid-morning, the best time to watch the condors soar just metres away.
  • The villages of Yanque and Maca, and the Antahuilque and Choquetico viewpoints (pre-Inca terracing).
  • Buffet lunch in Chivay, included in the buffet version (from S/ 105 per person). There is also a standard, cheaper version.

The upside: you see the canyon and the condors in a single day and for less money. The demanding part: a very early start and a lot of the day spent on the road.

What the 2-day tour is like

The 2-day, 1-night Colca tour follows the same route but spreads it out, with an overnight stay in Chivay:

  • Departure at 8:00–9:00 a.m. (no dawn start), free afternoon in Chivay.
  • La Calera hot springs (38–40 °C) at sunset — most people's favourite moment.
  • A starry night in the valley and, the next day, Cruz del Cóndor early with fewer crowds.
  • Optional on the way back: a direct connection from Chivay to Puno if you are continuing to Lake Titicaca, without returning to Arequipa.

Quick comparison

  • Time: Full Day = one intense day (14–15 hours). 2 days = a relaxed pace with no dawn start on day one.
  • Price: the Full Day is cheaper (from S/ 105 with buffet). The 2-day adds a hotel and dinner/breakfast — get a quote based on hotel category.
  • Condors: both reach Cruz del Cóndor at a good time; on the 2-day you arrive earlier and with fewer crowds.
  • Hot springs: only the 2-day includes La Calera at a leisurely pace (on the Full Day it is optional and depends on time).
  • Altitude: both cross Patapampa (4,910 m). The 2-day is gentler if you have just arrived in Arequipa.

Which one suits you?

  • Choose the Full Day if: you are short on time, in good shape and have already spent 1–2 days acclimatising in Arequipa.
  • Choose the 2-day if: you hate early starts, are travelling with children or older adults, want hot springs and unhurried photos — or if you are continuing to Puno.
  • Arriving from sea level? The Arequipa + Colca 3D/2N combo (from S/ 219) sorts everything out: day 1 in the city (acclimatisation), days 2–3 in Colca without rushing.
  • A trekker? The 3-day trek to the bottom of the canyon descends to the Sangalle oasis: a whole other league, a whole other experience.

What you should know before you go

  • The Colca entrance ticket is paid separately on both tours (with different rates for Peruvians and foreign visitors).
  • Bring layers: below 0 °C at dawn in Patapampa, 20 °C at midday in the valley.
  • The 4,910 m pass is the highest point of the trip: eat a light breakfast, stay hydrated and check our Arequipa guide.
  • The condors fly best in clear skies between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m.; that is why both tours aim for that window.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see condors all year round?

Yes, though with variation: the best visibility is in the dry season (April–November). In the rainy season (January–March) the valley is green and there are fewer tourists.

Can I do Colca without returning to Arequipa?

Yes: with the 2-day tour you can take the connection to Puno from Chivay and continue towards Lake Titicaca.
