Day-by-Day Itinerary
Our adventure begins very early, between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m., with pick-up from your accommodation (provided it is near the historic centre of Cusco) to board our tourist bus. The roughly 2-hour drive takes us to the village of Mollepata, passing beautiful, picturesque towns such as Poroy and Limatambo along the way. In Mollepata (2,900 m) we enjoy a delicious breakfast before continuing by bus to Soraypampa (3,900 m), where we begin the roughly one-hour uphill hike to the beautiful Humantay Lake (4,200 m).
This spot is perfect for photos and for taking in the crystalline colour of the lake, with views of Mount Humantay (5,450 m) in the Vilcabamba range. Our guide explains the significance of this magnificent place, and we also glimpse the sacred Salkantay (6,271 m), the second-highest mountain in the Cusco region. We then head back to Soraypampa for a delicious buffet lunch before returning to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00–5:30 p.m.
What to bring: trekking shoes, poles (optional), sunscreen and insect repellent, sunglasses, warm/thermal clothing, snacks, water bottles and a rain poncho (December to March).
