Day-by-Day Itinerary
Departure from Cusco between 4:30 and 4:45 a.m. towards Qollasuyo, the ancient road of the Quechua people and an important part of the Tawantinsuyo (the four regions of the Incas). We reach Checacupe and then the district of Pitumarca, where the history of the first rebels who defied Pachacútec began. We pass beautiful landscapes and valleys before arriving at the native villages of Japura and Hachipacha, home to Quechua communities, and finally Quechuyno, where we have breakfast.
After breakfast we begin our hike of roughly 3 hours, passing stunning scenery and lakes where South American camelids live (alpacas, llamas, vicuñas), until we reach the Vinicunca pass at 5,200 m above sea level. There we take in the breathtaking view of the Rainbow Mountain and its magical colours, unique to this part of Peru, with Mount Ausangate — the highest peak near Cusco — in the distance.
After time for photos, we return to Hachipacha for a buffet lunch and then head back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 5:00–5:30 p.m.
What to bring: trekking shoes, poles (optional), sunscreen and insect repellent, sunglasses, warm/thermal clothing, snacks, water bottles and a rain poncho (December to March).
