DETAILED ITINERARY:
01:50 p.m.
During this time we carry out the respective pick-ups from the Plaza de Armas of Arequipa.
We begin our tour by visiting the Arequipa Volcanoes Viewpoint, where we can see and take photographs with the famous Misti, Chachani and Pichupichu. After that we head towards the Sillar Route, a tourist circuit rich in history and living culture, where you visit quarries and areas where sillar originated. The first point where we stop will be the Añashuayco Quarry, which we reach in approximately 45 minutes (Entrance ticket to the Sillar Quarries S/.05.00 soles per person). It is currently being worked; the quarrymen carry out their tasks from very early in the morning. Here we can admire a huge canyon with cliffs (ignimbrite walls) several metres high, formed by the extraction of the sillar blocks. At this point we will tell you the history of sillar, how it is made and the use it has always been given. In this quarry you can admire a giant carving of the Church of the Compañía de Jesús made by the quarrymen themselves; you can also admire and take photographs with the various carvings of figures such as a bear, lion, horse, heart and many more. We can also visit one of the quarrymen so they can explain what their daily work is like and let us try cutting one of their stone blocks ourselves.
Next we move on to the Culebrillas Gorge, which is 30 minutes away from Añashuayco (Entrance ticket S/.08.00 soles per person). On reaching this point we take a walk of approximately 20 minutes inside the small canyon formed by the passage of water, with walls of 15 to 20 metres; as we go deeper in, the walls of the little canyon gradually increase in height. At the end of the walk we can see petroglyphs made by the Wari culture more than a thousand years ago. Before returning to the city we will see the Apachetas, formations of stones placed one on top of the other that are a symbol of gratitude towards nature and also attract good luck, and which create a mystical feeling.
